Consider this: Why would two 30-year-old guys who arc just about to have their first child both be running for a Landrum City Council seat? Don't they know what a first child does to your life? (Your former life.) Doug Brannon's wife is due in November and Mitch Stewart's wife is due in January. Still, one of these two is going to be taking a seat on the coun cil after tomorrow's special election. We're lucky they're willing to do it. Each is an out standing candidate. But a fulltime job, a council seat and a new baby? Good luck, fellas. Get some sleep now, while you can. The Tryon Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce board of directors talked about the recession a bit last week, and its effect on local merchants. Several interesting points were brought out. N C 28782 Polk County Honors Its Own On Independence Day, while Americans across the country celebrate freedom and peace, Polk County will honor the local men and women who served in Operation Desert Storm. A Military Appreciation Committee has been appointed by the Polk County Commis sioners to coordinate the event, which will be held at noon on July 4, 1991 in front of the Polk County Courthouse. Each of the attending service men and women or their designee will be presented an American flag and other mementos. "Invitations have been mailed to all 30 of the known Polk County service personnel who served in the Gulf," said Harry Evans, committee chairman. "We need help from the com munity to ensure that we have a complete list." Following are the names of the individuals to whom invita tions have been mailed: Stuart Whitesides, Brian Parker, Timothy Pruitt, William A. Shawn was a member of the Beta Club. He is the son of Gloria Suber and Verbus Logan of Tryon. He will attend UN- Charlotte this fall. It is not a part of the normal aging process. It is a tragic illness which places a tremendous strain on the family, both finan cially and emotionally. Coping can be difficult; but, support groups exists to ease the burden. Polk County's family support group meets each month in Tlie Meeting Place (old St. Luke's Hospital, lower level).
